This year marks 40 years of The Legend of Zelda, four decades of adventure, discovery, unforgettable music, legendary dungeons, and memories that shaped generations of gamers around the world.
Since its debut in 1986, the Zelda series has become one of Nintendo’s most iconic franchises, constantly reinventing itself while still keeping the spirit of exploration and adventure alive. From the original NES classic to legendary entries like The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time, The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker, The Legend of Zelda: Twilight Princess, and The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, every era of Zelda has left its mark on gaming history.

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom Turns 3 Years Old

It’s hard to believe, but The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom officially turns three years old few days ago.
Released on May 12, 2023, Tears of the Kingdom launched with enormous expectations following the success of The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild and somehow managed to exceed them for many fans. From the skies above Hyrule to the mysterious Depths below, TOTK expanded Nintendo’s open-world formula in ways that felt creative, ambitious, and uniquely Zelda.
The game introduced memorable new abilities such as Ultrahand, Fuse, Recall, and Ascend, giving players unprecedented freedom in how they explored, fought enemies, and solved puzzles. Whether players were building ridiculous contraptions, discovering hidden caves, or piecing together the story of the Zonai, TOTK quickly became one of the most talked-about Nintendo games in years.
Three years later, the game still has an active community sharing builds, theories, secrets, and favorite moments across the internet. Many fans also view Tears of the Kingdom as the conclusion of Zelda’s “Wild Era,” which began with Breath of the Wild back in 2017.
With rumors of new Zelda projects, remakes, and the upcoming live-action movie continuing to grow, it feels like the franchise may soon be entering a brand-new chapter. Still, TOTK remains a defining part of modern Zelda history and one of Nintendo’s most ambitious adventures to date.

Nintendo Celebrates Zelda's Anniversary With Surprise September 17 Release

While attention is focused on rumors of an The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time remake, Nintendo has also confirmed new content for the “Wild Era” of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, which may mark one of its final updates.
Announced via Nintendo Today, the update celebrates the game’s third anniversary with new content and an upcoming amiibo featuring Mineru’s Construct, the mechanical body Link builds in the Depths during the Spirit Temple section. The amiibo is set to release on September 17 and also unlocks a special Mineru-themed paraglider fabric, reportedly with a glow-in-the-dark effect.
The figure itself is highly detailed, featuring movable arms as highlighted by Nintendo, making it a notable collectible for fans of the game.
However, the timing of the release has sparked discussion, as it coincides with Nintendo’s planned Switch 2 price increase from $450 to $500. Some fans see this as part of a broader transition away from the “Wild Era” of Zelda.
With rumors circulating about a possible Ocarina of Time remake and growing attention toward the upcoming live-action Zelda film, speculation is increasing that Nintendo may be moving toward a new phase for the franchise.
Additional reports also suggest a potential announcement window as early as June, with a possible holiday release for the rumored remake, alongside talk of a new 2D Zelda title in development.

Ocarina of Time Remake Rumors Resurface After New Nintendo Comments

Nintendo may have quietly hinted at the long-rumored remake of The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time for the Nintendo Switch 2. Earlier this month, reports surfaced claiming that Nintendo was preparing a remake of one of the most beloved Zelda titles ever made for a potential late 2026 release. While Nintendo has yet to officially confirm the project, recent comments from company president Shuntaro Furukawa have sparked fresh speculation.
Following Nintendo’s latest financial briefing, Furukawa revealed that several unannounced Switch 2 titles are planned for release during the latter half of the company’s current fiscal year. Nintendo already has a packed lineup ahead, including titles such as Yoshi and the Mysterious Book, Star Fox, Splatoon Raiders, and Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave. However, Furukawa’s mention of additional unannounced games has fueled theories that Ocarina of Time could be among them.
“We have many new titles planned for Nintendo Switch 2,” Furukawa stated, noting that Nintendo intends to reveal more information “at the appropriate time.”
Interest in the rumored remake has only grown after the same insider who previously leaked the project also accurately revealed the existence of the new Star Fox game before its official announcement. That track record has added more credibility to claims that a modern version of Ocarina of Time may indeed be in development.
The timing would also make sense for Nintendo, as 2026 marks the 40th anniversary of The Legend of Zelda. A remake of Ocarina of Time could serve as a major celebration of the franchise’s legacy.
If Nintendo is preparing to unveil the project soon, a summer Nintendo Direct presentation could be the perfect stage. Historically, Nintendo tends to hold a major Direct presentation around June to showcase upcoming releases, although no event has yet been officially confirmed for 2026.

The Legend of Zelda movie release date delayed

Nintendo's The Legend of Zelda movie has a new release date. Zelda series creator Shigeru Miyamoto announced Wednesday that the live-action Zelda film will now be released on April 30, 2027 — a week earlier than previously planned.
This marks the second release date adjustment for Nintendo and Sony Pictures’s The Legend of Zelda movie. The film was initially set to premiere on March 27, 2027, before Nintendo later announced a delay that pushed the release back by six weeks.
Release date changes are starting to become a trend for Nintendo’s film projects. The Super Mario Bros. Movie also experienced a delay before launch, while its follow-up, The Super Mario Galaxy Movie, reportedly had its release moved forward. Nintendo seems to enjoy keeping both fans and theater chains guessing.
